Eco-chic received the royal seal of approval on the opening day of London Fashion Week , with the first-ever Sustainable Fashion Show staged in a tent erected in the grounds of Prince Charles's London home, Clarence House.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson; Lola Young, Baroness of Hornsey; the actor, Colin Firth's wife, Livia, who runs an eco boutique in West London; Laura Bailey; the Earl and Countess of St Germans; Sir Tom Shebbeare, the director of the Prince's Charities; and Jo Wood, were among the front-row guests.
The catwalk event was staged as part of START, one of Prince Charles's new sustainable living initiatives, which is taking place at a "garden party" and trade exhibit, where everything from eco-friendly paint and coffins made from sheep's wool are on show.

START, open to the public, concludes this Sunday. At the fashion show, a pounding rock-track, probably audible from Buckingham Palace, resounded as models took to the stage in sustainable clothes made from army surplus uniforms, recycled knitwear, and customised thrift shop and vintage finds.

Planet-friendly designer labels on the catwalk included Stella McCartney, People Tree, Vivienne Westwood, From Somewhere, Junky Styling, Noki by the Scots designer J.J. Hudson, and Christopher Raeburn, whose designs are made in an East London studio from discarded Finnish and American services uniforms.

"This fashion show proves that eco-fashion and sustainable-chic, which are often associated only with macrobiotic yogurt, hemp shirts and raffia work, can be funny, elegant and commercial," Boris Johnson said.

London Fashion Week, the flagship of a style economy valued at more than £21 billion, and headquartered at Somerset House features the catwalk collections of more than 100 designers.

EcoFashionRocks have sponsored 50 people for the first ever cycle trek around Zanzibar to support 'The Makunduchi Project' and pleased to report all 50 (including 3 toddlers on a bike trailer!) finished the 300km in one piece.

An amazing and eventful trip including lost luggage, lost flight bookings, left people, lost passport, 'lost' brakes or other fairly essential parts (saddle, pedals and chain all went in one go at one point), a broken wrist, too much immodium and a close shave with a truck...a true african experience.

Most vivid memories being the hundreds of beautiful children running up to us and waving us on shouting 'Jambo Jambo!' (Hello) on our way around the whole island, constantly beaming and laughing, despite their poverty and conditions. It was very poignant to remember that 1 in 6 children die before their 7th birthday, with the majority dying before they are 2 due to the poor health conditions.

The highlight of the trip was arriving at Makunduchi Hospital and seeing first hand the work that is being done to address this. We experienced the work of Makunduchi hospital first hand with a 22 year old mother with severe pneumonia and newborn baby, both with HIV were being treated before our very eyes, and hopefully another two lives will be saved.

Mobile communications, and Skype on mobile play a key part for the effectiveness of the hospital. A babies life was saved just before our arrival due to quick communication with the uk. The 5 week old baby (whose mother had died a week after giving birth) had been looked after by villagers fed on only water. The call back to the uk team and quick medical advice back and the baby was saved.

Bike ride monies raised are over 40k and still coming in.

The money raised will pay for a much needed new maternity ward and facilities and directly help to decrease the mother and baby mortality rate in Makunduchi further.

The Foundation Agency and Fashion Made Fair have teamed up and bring you an ethical sample sale from Thursday 20th - Sunday 23rd May. We are delighted to be supporting The Makunduchi Project, and its 50 cylclists riding around Zanzibar this June. The Makunduchi Project (www.makunduchi.com) is a small, but significant project transforming healthcare and a hospital in Zanzibar, particularly saving the lives of many mothers and children.

Zanzibar is known as the ‘Spice Island’ and lies in the Indian Ocean, 6 degrees south of the equator. The white sandy beaches are magnificent and the coral reef creates stunning lagoons – there’s a sense of paradise.

The reality is stark however. Average life expectancy is a staggering 47 years. One in 180 women die during delivery of their child and 1 in 6 children die under the age of 7 with the majority dying when aged less than 2 years.
The Makunduchi Project is about to change this and you can be a part of the solution.

In June 50 supporters are cycling around Zanzibar to raise both awareness and funds for the hospital and its staff. We will be contributing to a much needed maternity ward which will have a major impact on maternal health and survival of both mothers and babies.

Alice In Wonderland @ EFR

Yesterday we felt incredibly priviledged to shoot a new EFR campaign with celebrated photographer Ivan Merrell. As well of tons of other work he shoots all the M&S kids campaigns so his level of expertise with kids and fashion is unprecedented....we couldn't of asked for more.

I don't quite think any of us were prepared for the sheer chaos that 8 small children in one room can bring but somehow we managed to turn this into an advantage and get some great shots. Look out for our Alice in Wonderland images that will be on the website soon!

I do have to say a big thank you to our art director Sarah who was an absolute godsend not only in directing but also helping to merchandise, style and prepare all the outfits. An amazing lady with a great vision!

H&M's Garden Collection....

We met with the PR for H&M yesterday and were totally inspired by their new Garden Collection made entirely from sustainable, organic & recycled materials. As we all know here ecofashion is the way forward & it's great to see such an iconic brand taking the lead on the high street with such a beautiful & affordable collection. Gone are the days when sustainable fashion meant hemp dresses & flat sandals, now we can all shop with a conscience and look fabulous!

It officially launches on 25th March and combines a whole host of ultra feminine chiffon dresses made from recycled polyester & organic cotton dresses, shorts & tops. H&M are members of the Organic Exchange which is a non profit member based organisation dedicated to expanding the organic cotton market & other sustainable textiles so they really are leading the way. Now all we need is the rest of the high street to follow so we can all help make the world a better place.....H&M officially rocks!

New Teenage Range for Boden....

Johnnie Boden, 46 set up his eponymous label in 1991 after abandoning a career in stockbroking. He launched a catalogue consisting of eight menswear products and has since branched into womenswear and childrenswear (which we here at eco fashion rocks love). Boden was launched online in 1999 and since then hasn't looked back.

We are now over the moon to hear they have just launched a teen range named after the founder, Johnnie b. It fills the gap between child to adult starting from about age 10 upwards and if his past success is anything to go by is sure to be a hit with teenaers and mothers alike (one of the few brands appealing to both!)

Who else is in awe of Emma Watson? A credible acting career (now filming the final Harry Potter movie), awesome ad campaigns for Chanel & Burberry, studying English literature at America's Brown University & now proving to be a girl with a conscience by choosing to throw her fashionable flair into designing an ethical collection for "People Tree". And still under 20 years old!

She's teamed up with desgners Richard Nicoll and Thakoon (hugely admired in fashion's inner circle), with the aim of creating a line for teenagers to appeal to their consciences as well as their sense of cool. And judging from a sneak preview it will be flying off the shelves with easy to wear cotton vests, scarves, t-shirt dresses,linen casuals & hoodies for the boys. As we all know fair trade fashion may cost a bit more but it allows those who make it to earn a decent living and be able to take care of their families & live with dignity.

We applaud the foresight of three high profile European girls, (including Charlotte Casiraghi, Princess Caroline of Monaco's daughter), who are forging ahead with the Ever Manifesto, an online environmental zine and educational programme for eco-fashion.

The manifesto of the project itself is inspirational and well worth a read. Essentially documenting how we all need to work together to create an idealogical world where ethics and asthetics can work hand in hand and how every one of us has a responsibility to change the face of fashion with a sustainable solution for the next generation.
